| Abstract: |
This report presents the findings from a rapid literature review of the barriers to school attendance and reasons for student absence. It was commissioned by the Australian Education Research Organisation as part of its work on work on school attendance for Education Ministers. Whether a child attends school or is absent is underpinned by a wide range of factors. To organise this review, the Kids and Teens at School (KiTeS) framework, which is based on Bronfenbrenner's bioecological model, is used. This bioecological model portrays the child as embedded in a hierarchy of interacting systems. The review is structured into 7 sections: child factors, child educational factors, peer factors, parent and family factors, school climate factors, neighbourhood and community factors, and policy factors. The report focuses on available quantitative research that establishes a statistical association between an explanatory variable and absence from school. |
