| Abstract: | This study proposes a project-based learning methodology that emphasises technical research with the active participation of schoolchildren. The study focuses on ecological conservation using ceramic slurry 3D printing technology. It is categorised into two distinctive technical and educational aspects. The technical aspect deals with reverse scanning and 3D-printing of the hermit crab shells using a self-developed alumina slurry 3D printer. Apart from fabrication, the characterisation and comparison of 3D-printed shells with natural ones have been carried out. On the other hand, the educational aspect deals with the assessment of knowledge grasping and attentiveness of students involved in project-based learning. The results comprise successful 3D-printing hermit crab shells with a dimensional discrepancy of less than 5%. The compressive strength analysis showed that the 3D-printed shells show a comparable strength as that of natural ones despite differences in their composition. The adaptability test shows hermit crabs successfully adopting their new habitation by leaving the old ones. Apart from the technical aspect, the study proves the effectiveness of project-based learning over conventional classroom learning. A unique learning methodology that encompasses the active participation of schoolchildren and the technical know-how of the university researchers is presented. |
