| Abstract: | While national environmental education (EE) policies are crucial in advancing the field, there is a lack of available research and guidance to inform their development. This research aims to fill this gap by providing a comparative assessment of national EE policies in four South American countries with publicly available documents: Brazil, Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela. We designed an assessment framework based on educational policy recommendations and literature, tailored to the South American context. We used the framework to analyze policies across six dimensions: evidence-based, regionally situated, addressing community issues, political feasibility, financial realism, and stakeholder consensus. The results reveal differences in policy content, approach, and theoretical underpinnings, providing insights for future policy creation. This study is a step towards developing criteria to inform national EE policy development in South America and also highlights examples of well-developed policy approaches from multiple South American countries. |
