Abstract: Motivational interviewing (MI) is a conversational style which helps individuals to consider and make decisions about change. Previously, MI has been used by educational psychologists (EPs) in individual therapeutic work with children and young people. However, MI could potentially be applied across all areas of EP practice and even as a model for service delivery. Theoretical shifts in MI have promoted a move towards change and growth, which broadens opportunities for application within EP practice. This paper outlines the key elements of MI and explores opportunities for EPs to use the approach in broader ways, providing practical examples. It then challenges the reader to reflect on how MI fits into practice, outlining possible applications and offering a new model of practice for MI integration. Theories of learning MI are discussed with suggested next steps for EPs wishing to develop their MI confidence and competence. Limitations and future research possibilities are discussed.
