Abstract: In preparation for this lecture, the author read, among other studies, previous Sargent, Homans, and Hannah lectures. These papers read well, and, they continue to inform people today. Importantly, these lecturers addressed timely issues that confronted physical education in higher education and to some extent shaped the field as one now knows it. These papers did not offer a "how to" lesson in building a physical education as a field. Instead, these scholars informed their colleagues of how they can "live" their professional lives. Here, the author speaks about the "story behind the story," a narrative that provides a context for the rules and values that shaped the observations of previous lecturers. His first task is to summarize the thoughts of some of the previous lecturers who noted some of the changes that were affecting the field of physical education when they spoke.
