| Abstract: |
For example, individuals in jails with for-profit providers had a 37% decrease in odds (AOR =.627) of being identified as having SMI as compared with those in jails with nonprofit providers. In addition to the comparison of positive K6 screens between for-profit and nonprofit providers, differences in SMI identification by jail staff ("Jail identified as SMI") were also examined. Between 14 and 24% of individuals in jails have a serious mental illness (SMI),[1]-[5] and these correctional settings are legally required to provide individuals with mental health services, including psychosocial and pharmacological therapies that alleviate symptoms, improve functioning, and prevent relapse.[6]-[8] In order to establish standards around mental health services in jail, the American Psychiatric Association, along with several other national organizations,[9], [10] has provided recommendations.
