Abstract: An editorial is presented in which the authors discuss an increase in opioid overdose deaths from substance use disorders (SUDs) during the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S. and social determinants of health (SDOH) in relation to clinical care. The article examines AIDS activism and SDOH, the criminal justice system, community mobilization, and intervention, and how health systems and clinicians can utilize symbolic capital.
