Abstract: Picturebook biographies are a powerful tool to connect students to time periods and places beyond their own experiences. Biographies are opportunities to introduce students to individuals, genre study, and history/social studies. More specifically, exploring a diversity of biographies, in this case women, who have made an impact on communities and the world have the possibility to excite students to learn more about others. In this article, I use the history framework source-observe-contextualize-corroborate to model the use women's biographies in classrooms which meet English/language arts and social studies standards for elementary students.
