Abstract: The article examines the growing lack of purpose and feelings of emptiness and alienation among younger people. It discusses a 1981 study showing a sharply higher percentage of teenagers who reported worries about their health and feeling chronically empty, affected by a sense of inadequacy and lack of purpose. It explores disorders of the self, including symptoms and possible causes.
