| Abstract: | This article examines the association between drinking initiation age and problematic smart device use (PSDU) using data from the Korea Community Health Survey involving 473,470 adults aged 19 and older. PSDU was defined as experiencing daily life impairment due to excessive smart device use at least once per week, and problem drinking was characterized by frequent heavy alcohol consumption. Multivariate analysis revealed that earlier drinking initiation age was significantly associated with higher odds of PSDU in both men and women, independent of other factors such as age, education, marital status, employment, obesity, stress, and depression. The study highlights potential shared behavioral traits between early alcohol use and PSDU but notes limitations including its cross-sectional design, reliance on self-reported measures, and lack of data on smartphone usage types or younger populations.
