Abstract: This article discusses the portrayal of disasters in the mass media. The author contrasts the media's tendency to focus on the unique aspects of disasters with the continuity of issues such as poverty and inequality in the exacerbation of disasters. Examples of disasters in the media including the 2004 Asian tsunami are noted. The contrast between the public response to Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, Louisiana and its response to the California wildfires of 2007 is analysed for its implications regarding class in the U.S.
