| Abstract: |
The article provides an update on the incidence, causes, pathology and treatments of gastric cancer. The disease reportedly affects about one million people worldwide each year but geographic variation in incidence exists. The development of gastric cancer was attributed to various factors such as high intake of salt-preserved foods and salt, low consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables and high rates of Helicobacter pylori infection. Several prevention strategies suggested include improvement of sanitation, high intake of fresh fruits and vegetables and avoidance of smoking. An overview of screening programmes for groups at high risk is also provided. |
