Abstract: The article examines the African linguistic character of the Creole Gullah dialect, largely through an onomastic analysis of Gullah personal names. Emphasis is given to the importance of African American linguist Lorenzo Dow Turner's study of the Gullah language's relationship to African language. The presence of African phonology in Gullah names is explored. The African-influenced language and lexicology of the island of Caicos, part of the nation of Turks and Caicos, are also examined. More broadly, the author is concerned with the importance of linguistics to the character of the African diaspora.
