| Abstract (English): | Created in the context of the Cold War, as an initiative of UNESCO, CIESPAL has built itself, since its foundation in 1959, as a regional and international institution for the study of journalism and communication in Latin America. This article seeks to reconstruct the trajectory of more than 60 years--from the rise to the crisis--of this teaching, research and documentation center. Through historical-critical analysis, changes in theoretical-methodological orientation are highlighted, as well as role changes, under the argument that its performance, in addition to being dynamic, is related to the political and social projects that emerged in the transition from dictatorial regimes to the democratic scenario on the continent. | Abstract (Spanish): | Creado en el contexto de la Guerra Fría, como iniciativa de la UNESCO, CIESPAL se ha construido, desde su fundación en 1959, como una institución regional e internacional para el estudio del periodismo y la comunicación en América Latina. Este artículo busca reconstruir la trayectoria de más de 60 años -- desde el surgimiento hasta la crisis--de este centro de docencia, investigación y documentación. A través del análisis histórico-crítico, se destacan los cambios de orientación teórico-metodológica, así como los cambios de rol, bajo el argumento de que su desempeño, además de ser dinámico, está relacionado con los proyectos políticos y sociales surgidos en la transición de los regímenes dictatoriales al escenario democrático en el continente. | Abstract (Portuguese): | Surgido no contexto da Guerra Fria, como iniciativa da UNESCO, o CIESPAL construiu-se, desde sua fundação em 1959, como uma instituição ao mesmo tempo regional e internacional para o estudo do jornalismo e da comunicação na América Latina. Este artigo busca reconstruir a trajetória de mais de 60 anos--da ascensão à crise--deste centro de ensino, pesquisa e documentação. Por meio da análise histórico-crítica, destacam-se mudanças de orientação teóricometodológica, bem como trocas de papéis, sob o argumento que sua atuação, além de dinâmica, se relaciona com os projetos políticos e sociais que emergiram na transição dos regimes ditatoriais ao cenário democrático no continente.
