Description
Summary:This study exposes a controlled trial of social intervention in families of schizophrenic patients with a high risk of relapsing. Patients were selected because they had much contact with relatives with a high level of expressed emotion. All patients maintained their treatments with neuroleptics. Half of the 24 families were ramdomly asignated to a rutine external check-up and the other had a social intervention package, consisted of an educational program on schizophrenia, a family group and family sessions for relatives and patients. The relapse rate in the control group was 50% compared to 9% of the experimental group (P=0,04). The objectives of the interventions were achieved in 73% of the experimental families, which had no relapsing patients. Results highlight the causal role played by the expressed emotions of relatives in the schizophrenic patients relapse, as well as the therapeutical effectiveness of the social intervention combined with the pharmacological treatment.
