Description
Summary:Retroactive masking has been frequently used in the study of early visual percettion. The justification for it was based on the assumption that the apparition of the mask blocked the processing of the stimulus and consequently permited the analysis of the early stages of the perceptual process. However, the fact that the criteria normally used for perception comes from the reports of the subjects, together with recent experimental evidence which reveals that masking does not interrupt the perceptual process in itself but simply avoids the conscious experience of the perceived stimulus, forces a distinction between perception and conscious experience on one side, and the subsequent use of masking as a technique for analyzing early perception, on the other. The present paper reviews and discusses recent work in the area.
