the study were the following: (1) to test if high and low self-control subjects showed differences in
perceived tolerance and distress when confronted with the cold-pressor; (2) to test the type of
strategies used by high and low self-control subjects to cope with aversive stimulation, and their
relative efficacy; (3) to test if the use of a pleasant-distractive strategy or one that enhances the
subject�s own competency when confronted with an aversive situation, differentially affects the high
and low self-control subjects in the perceived tolerance and distress. The results of the covariance
analysis did not show significant differences between high and low self-control subjects in time of
tolerance to the freezing water, nor in perceived distress during the test, although in this last variable
an interaction was found between experimental groups and self-control levels. The results are
discussed. |
